Cultural Studies and Digital Culture

Newsflash: DigitalHumanities@Arts.Leuven

The Leuven Arts Faculty hosts a double Digital Humanities event with Professor Andrew Prescott, recently appointed Head of the Department of Digital Humanities at King’s College, London. His inaugural lecture, titled "An Electric Current of the Imagination", is available online at http://blogs.cch.kcl.ac.uk/wip/2012/01/26/an-electric-current-of-the-imagination/ (25 January, 2012).

In continuation with the activities of the former Maerlant Centre, Cultural Studies focuses also on culture in the digital sphere.

"Whereas the Maerlant Centre focused on the interrelationships between tradition and ICT, Cultural Studies' main focus is more radically Technological culture and the Digital Humanities, but in contexts closely related to higher education and research."

The ICS is involved in projects on three main topics from a cultural studies perspective:

  • Digitization of Cultural Heritage, where it teams up with Alamire Foundation and Illuminare to form the Alamire Digital Lab, a state-of-the-art Photolab at the cutting edge of technology.
  • Social software and web technologies
  • Open and Distance Learning and E-Learning

We are also involved in the digitization of the bibliography of the Revue d'Histoire Ecclésiastique and in the Open Journal "Image [&] Narrative".
